ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In *Hanging on Time*, Buu Chi constructs a dark, vast, and almost empty space where humans appear tiny under the weight of a giant clock. The clock face is not entirely intact, but resembles an old material slab, with markings, hands, and red-orange dots as signals that both measure and warn. From there, a long horizontal line extends, holding the slender figure of a person in a narrow halo of light.
In the lower corner, an oil lamp creates a weak light source, contrasting with the enveloping darkness. The disparity in proportion between the person, the clock, and the empty space makes time no longer appear as a neutral quantity, but as an invisible power controlling destiny. The work places the viewer before a feeling of suspension, waiting, and unease; thereby opening up reflections on the finitude of human life, loneliness, and the desire to retain light in the relentless flow of time.
