ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In *Saint Valentine*, Buu Chi creates a space of almost absolute stillness. A white dove, a red fruit on a plate, and a geometric table are present amidst a cool white-gray background. The objects are simplified, separated, and surrounded by large empty spaces, giving the composition a clean yet subtly lonely feel.
The red of the fruit and the beak and feet of the dove become rare color signals in the entire painting. They evoke love, life, and the desire for communion, but are placed in a space that is almost devoid of people. The dove—a familiar symbol of peace, love, and a message—stands beside the red fruit without any apparent action, creating a state of ambiguous waiting.
Through this restraint of imagery and color, *Saint Valentine* does not illustrate love in the conventional romantic sense. The work places the viewer at a crossroads between the symbolism of love and the silence of existence, thereby prompting reflection on waiting, devotion, and the loneliness hidden within the need for connection.
