ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In Still Life, Buu Chi not only arranges familiar objects but also creates a cultural space rich in symbolism. The moon lute, two-stringed fiddle, flute, theatrical masks, ceramic vases, and fruits are arranged on a slanted table, creating intersecting diagonal lines and a compressed visual rhythm. Behind them, a geometric window frame opens to a bright green space, contrasting with the dark interior, making the objects both concrete and seemingly emerging from the depths of memory.
The shades of green, blue, yellow, and black are treated with warmth, while the red of the masks and fruits becomes evocative accents. The silent musical instruments, the quietly hanging masks, and the traditional objects elevate the painting beyond the conventional still life genre, opening up contemplation about performing arts, spiritual life, and cultural values preserved in silence. Through this arrangement, Buu Chi places the viewer before a moment of stillness, where objects become traces of humanity and memory.
