ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In *New Moon*, Tran Van Thao opens up a soft, luminous space with layers of ivory white, grayish-blue, and pale purple that almost blend together. Against this thin background, circles, outlines, yellow spots, and scattered symbols appear with varying intensities, like signs floating between appearance and disappearance. A dark blue plus sign near the center creates a firm focal point, maintaining the rhythm of the otherwise sparse and empty composition.
The work doesn't directly depict the image of the new moon, but rather evokes the state of light just beginning: weak, unformed, yet subtly transforming the entire space. The delicate charcoal lines, pale patches of color, and touches of yellow and orange place the viewer in a slow observational situation, where the eye must adapt to the very subtle shifts in hue and traces.
As the title of the artist's solo exhibition, *New Moon* can be seen as a sign of a new creative cycle. After periods leaning towards material surfaces, memory, and somber tones, Tran Van Thao moves towards a lighter, more airy language with a greater capacity for renewal. Through the balance between presence and silence, the work opens up a sense of hidden light, creation, and hope that does not yet need to be expressed in words.
