In Summer, Tran Van Thao doesn't depict the season through concrete landscapes, but rather transforms the feeling of heat, density, and agitation into a highly compressed structure of color. A broad expanse of reddish-brown blankets the upper part like a layer of stifling air, while the lower part is composed of overlapping patches of black, grayish-purple, and orange-red, intersected by freehand lines, numbers, and symbols. Forms that are half-familiar, half-unfamiliar—suggesting windows, objects, human figures, or traces of an urban space—appear only to be obscured by color, leaving the painting perpetually unfinished.

The composition is compressed downwards, contrasting with the large expanse of color above, creating a feeling of both heaviness and anticipation of an explosion. The spontaneous brushstrokes, rough patches of color, and disjointed symbols place the viewer in a state of uncertain perception: constantly wanting to identify the image but being pulled back to the rhythm and materiality of painting. Thus, summer emerges not just as a season of the year, but as a state of body and mind in response to rising temperatures, light, and the pace of life.
