ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In "Rain in the Sun," Tran Van Thao organizes the painting's surface using a broad, gentle, yet not entirely tranquil, blue background. Against this backdrop, patches of white, gray, pale yellow, and black appear as interwoven areas of light and shadow; elongated lines, flowing streaks, and opening and closing forms create a feeling that is both like raindrops and objects dissolving into the air. A few touches of red and yellow are placed sparingly, enough to momentarily ignite the rhythm of the painting.
The work doesn't directly depict a rainstorm under the sun, but transforms the phenomenon into a visual state where light and darkness, light and heavy, stillness and movement coexist. The half-familiar, half-unfamiliar shapes cause the viewer to constantly fluctuate between recognition and association, as if viewing the scene through a thin veil of water. Through the overlapping of colors and traces, "Rain in the Sun" opens up a perception of the fragile beauty of contrasting moments: light doesn't dispel the rain, nor does the rain extinguish the brightness of the space.
