In *Shadows of the Underworld*, Tran Van Thao creates a somber space using two color palettes—grayish-blue and black—divided horizontally. On this surface, curves, freehand strokes, white patches, and streaks of orange-yellow appear scattered like signs being recorded and gradually erased. A horizontal blue line runs across the painting, creating a transitional rhythm, while the solid black areas and flowing color streaks draw the viewer's gaze down into the depths below.

The work places the viewer in a precarious state of perception between presence and concealment: forms seem about to emerge but always sink back into the darkness. "Shadows" here are not merely the dark parts of the image, but also traces of memory, emotion, or an elusive existence. Through the contrast between solid and void, light and darkness, rising and falling, *Shadows of the Underworld* opens up a profound inner space where what is hidden still silently resonates on the surface of the painting.
