In "The Spiral," Tran Van Thao organizes the painting's surface as a structure being assembled from multiple layers of materials, lines, and color blocks. Overlapping strips of fabric, paper, and geometric shapes create a space that is both constructive and retains the roughness of the handcrafted process. Shades of yellow, turquoise, purple, orange, and red are placed side-by-side in bright rhythms, contrasting with the thin black lines and the solid black base.

The focal point of the work is the spiral within the pale yellow area below. The spiral not only draws the eye to the center but also creates an inward movement, contrasting with the diagonal lines and expanding strips of shape in the upper part. This struggle between convergence and dispersion places the viewer in a state of continuous perception: wanting to follow an order while simultaneously feeling that the structure can always be dismantled and reassembled.

Through a combination of geometry, mixed materials, and freehand drawing, the Spiral evokes the cycle of memory and creation—each return to a starting point simultaneously opening up a new layer of movement.
