ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In *Lines*, Tran Van Thao simplifies the canvas into a sparse structure, where horizontal and diagonal lines and large black areas serve to organize the space. Against a cool gray background, a thin horizontal axis extends almost the entire width of the work, blocked by small red dots at both ends. From this axis, black lines spread out in various directions, suggesting arrows, sails, or directional pointers, while maintaining the nature of abstract drawings. Flowing color streaks and freehand strokes lessen the rigidity of the geometry, creating a transition between control and spontaneity.
The composition places the viewer before a space that seems clearly oriented but does not lead to a defined destination. The lines simultaneously divide, connect, and alter the plane; each direction seems to always contain the possibility of reversal. Through the contrast between stillness and movement, balance and uncertainty, *Lines* opens up contemplation about the journey, choices, and the human need for orientation in an ever-changing space.
