ARTISTIC JOURNEY

Truong Cong Tung, born in 1986 in Đắk Lắk province, Vietnam, grew up amidst various ethnic minority communities in the Central Highlands, a region rich in culture and history. He graduated from Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts in 2010, specializing in lacquer painting.

Truong Cong Tung's works explore how land myths and the living practices of indigenous communities have been disrupted by intense modernization, war, and industrialization in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. With a unique approach, he views his studio practice as a gardener tending to a plot of land, combining found and organic elements – primarily sourced from industrial-scale agricultural forests – to create deeply interconnected works. He is particularly interested in how worldviews on life have persisted despite various disruptions and how they continue to sustain cultural practices, human relations, and daily rituals.

Truong Cong Tung is a member of the Art Labor collective (established in 2012), a group of artists working to connect visual art with social sciences and everyday life. The collective generates informal knowledge through artistic and cultural activities in various public contexts and locations. Tung’s works, both solo and as part of the Art Labor Collective, have been widely exhibited in Vietnam and internationally. He is also the recipient of prestigious awards and fellowships, notably co-winning the 8th edition of the Arnaldo Pomodoro Sculpture Prize.
