ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In "The Sitting Woman," Dinh Y Nhi organizes the image on a clearly contrasting structure: a hot, thick, and turbulent orange-red-yellow background, opposite the woman's figure constructed from white and black blocks and rough, decisive lines. The vertical composition makes the figure's body appear elongated, despite the seated posture, creating a feeling of both stillness and instability. On the visual level, the background is not just a backdrop, but becomes a field of color with emotional pressure. Against this color field, the black and white form appears direct, sharp, and not idealized. The woman is not placed within a clear narrative; her posture, facial expression, body, and background colors together create an indeterminate state: calm or tense, exposed or withdrawn, clearly present yet not easily grasped completely. The phrase "security checked" is a noteworthy detail because it introduces a language different from the system of form and color into the painting. It evokes the everyday, administrative, and supervisory aspects of life, but it shouldn't necessarily be considered the sole key to explaining the entire work. Placed alongside the woman's body, the inscription subtly shifts the sensory field, making the image more complex: between the body and the sign, between private emotions and the clashes of external life. Therefore, the haunting power of "The Sitting Woman" lies not in a direct message, but in the simultaneous presence of multiple visual forces: the warm background, the black and white form, the crude brushstrokes, the direct sitting posture, and the unexpected inscription. From these elements, the work evokes an unsettling image of human life: a body sitting still but not entirely still, clearly visible but not easily explained, familiar yet retaining layers of meaning that cannot yet be named.
