ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In "My Little Happiness," Dinh Y Nhi organizes her work around the rhythmic repetition of numerous small human figures, arranged almost in a tabletop fashion. On a bright, translucent paper background, thin watercolor strokes and simplified black lines retain only the minimal features of the face: hair, eyes, nose, and mouth. Each figure displays very little detail, just enough to suggest a presence, but not enough to become a distinct portrait. Notably, the torso, arms, or legs in many figures are depicted with diagonal lines or X-shaped strokes. These markings are not necessarily interpreted as negation of action, but rather as a way of interrupting the form, preventing the body from being seen in an anatomical or natural sense of movement. The body here becomes a brief visual sign, almost a symbol of a state rather than a figure in action. The rhythmic repetition of the small figures creates a feeling that is both regular and fragile. Viewers recognize many human figures, but it's difficult to separate each one into a distinct individual with a clear biography, actions, or emotions. Each figure is a subtle variation within a shared rhythm: there are differences, but these differences are very subtle, lying in facial expressions, angles, areas of darkness, or how the body is depicted. Titled "My Little Happiness," the work evokes a delicate and somewhat paradoxical feeling. "Happiness" doesn't appear as complete or radiant joy, but as small fragments of life: fragile, sparse, quiet, and somewhat elusive. The faces are there, the gazes are there, but everything is held within a restrained rhythm, so that joy, if present, doesn't resound aloud, but remains as a discreet inner state.
