ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In his lacquer painting "Cat and Fish," Duong Tuan Kiet explores an everyday moment through witty storytelling and rich visual imagery. The cat sits precariously on a chair, leaning towards the fish tank on the table; its elongated posture, raised front paws, and focused gaze create a movement that is both tense and whimsical. Meanwhile, the fish above swim in their own space, making the distance between desire and the object the focal point of the composition.

The simplified forms, thin and slightly rough outlines, combined with shades of purplish-brown, gray-blue, and pale yellow, create a subdued, rustic surface, close to the feeling of an expressive sketch. Instead of emphasizing the elaborate gloss of traditional lacquer, the work focuses on the direct traces of the hand and the vibration of the material. Through a small scenario, Duong Tuan Kiet evokes the instincts, curiosity, and playfulness of life, while demonstrating his ability to transform a familiar scene into a vibrant and charming visual structure.
