ARTISTIC JOURNEY

Duong Tuan Kiet (1940–2017) was an artist who matured in the art environment of South Vietnam, with a creative journey shaped by practical work, persistent self-study, and continuous experimentation with various materials. His paintings combine human imagery, expressive emotions, and decorative thinking, thereby creating a unique visual language that is both modern and deeply rooted in local cultural memories.

In 1959, Duong Tuan Kiet enrolled in the Gia Dinh College of Fine Arts. After a year of preparatory studies, due to difficult economic circumstances and inability to cover living expenses and tuition fees, he was forced to leave the school. Although the formal training period was not long, the fundamental knowledge of drawing, composition, and color acquired there became an important foundation for his later self-study and creative work.

During the 1960s and 1970s, Duong Tuan Kiet earned a living by painting backdrops for traditional Vietnamese opera troupes and creating advertising billboards for cinemas in Saigon. This work required the ability to organize images on a large scale, quickly process form and color, and achieve visual impact from a distance. The theatrical and cinematic environment was therefore not only a means of livelihood but also contributed to honing his sense of dramatic tension, rhythm, composition, concise imagery, and the ability to use color to create atmosphere.

After 1975, when he was no longer involved with traditional Vietnamese opera and cinemas, Duong Tuan Kiet returned to easel painting. Building upon his formal training and years of experience, he continued self-study, experimenting with silk painting, oil painting, and especially lacquer painting. This was the period when he gradually transitioned from applied art to a more distinctly personal painting practice.

From the late 1970s, Duong Tuan Kiet began participating in art exhibitions in Ho Chi Minh City and national art exhibitions in 1980, 1982, and 1985. Through these activities, he gradually established his position in the art scene of Southern Vietnam. From 1998, he organized many solo exhibitions at Tu Do Gallery, including exhibitions in 1998, 1999, and 2003.

Duong Tuan Kiet's works were also featured in several international exhibitions, such as the exhibition at Rotonde Castle in Paris, France; APA Villa, Singapore in 1991; and Peace in Art at the International Monetary Fund headquarters in Washington, D.C., USA in 1992. and "A View from Vietnam" in London, England in 1998. His paintings are present in the collection of the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts as well as many private collections both domestically and internationally.

The central focus in Duong Tuan Kiet's paintings is often the human figure and the states of human life. The characters in his paintings are not depicted in a precise, realistic way, but are often stylized, simplified, and organized into expressive shapes. The lines are sometimes strong and decisive, sometimes soft and elongated, following the rhythm of the body's movement. Descriptive details are restrained to make the image concise, directing the viewer's attention to the posture, gaze, and inner state of the character.

His color palette leans towards muted shades such as brown, earthy red, black, dark blue, and deep yellow. Color does not simply serve a descriptive purpose but directly contributes to creating atmosphere, psychological depth, and a sense of nostalgia. In many of his works, the color blocks are organized in a rhythmic, interwoven pattern, with stylized outlines and forms, creating a composition that is both expressively compressed and decorative. This structure partly recalls his experience in theatrical arts, advertising, and his connection with traditional crafts.

In oil paintings, Duong Tuan Kiet often explores thick surfaces, overlapping layers of color, and the direct traces of the painting process. The lacquer creates areas of light and shadow, roughness, and material depth, making the imagery appear with significant weight and emotional intensity. In lacquer paintings, he utilizes the traditional characteristics of the material such as depth, gloss, and the process of applying and polishing layers of color, but not merely for decorative effect. He uses red, black, gold, and hidden layers of color to construct space and express the profound states of human emotion.

The artistic journey of Duong Tuan Kiet demonstrates a transformation from experience in crafts and applied arts to an independent painting practice. Through oil paintings, lacquer paintings, and silk paintings, he gradually harmonized imagery and expression, decorative elements and inner depth, traditional materials with a modern artistic spirit. His legacy lies in a tranquil world of painting, where the human figure becomes a repository of memories, emotions, and reflections on the fate of humanity amidst the transformations of modern Vietnamese society.
