All Aboard

In "All aboard," Nguyen Manh Hung depicts a crowd of passengers crammed together, clinging to an architectural structure resembling a traditional altar or temple gate. Bodies, backpacks, and luggage are squeezed into a narrow space, creating a sense of urgency and chaos, as if everyone is scrambling for a chance to embark on a journey with an unknown destination.

The contrast between the solemnity and intricate carvings of the religious architecture and the everyday jostling creates a characteristic satirical tone in Nguyen Manh Hung's art. The image of the crowd clinging to the "sacred gate" is developed by the artist from scenes of people running, clinging to, or trying to squeeze onto public transport, thereby associating death and the afterlife as an uncertain collective journey.

The vast white background almost eliminates the background, concentrating all visual weight on the group of people and the central religious structure. This organizational structure both highlights the crowdedness of the throng and evokes the feeling that they are suspended outside of a defined space and time. The luggage they carry is therefore not merely the belongings of the journey, but can also be interpreted as a metaphor for "karma"—the good and bad deeds each person accumulates in their life. Through a humorous yet not naive tone, the work raises questions about humanity's obsession with heaven and what truly determines the ability to pass through the final "gate."
