Introduction
“MATERIA RENATA” presents a profound artistic thesis on the regenerative potential of matter and thought in the era of consumption. Through Nguyễn Quốc Dân's collection of over 50 sculptures and installations made from recycled materials, the exhibition invites viewers to re-evaluate the value of waste, prompting reflection on environmental degradation and consumer culture. The artist transforms discarded objects into symbols of resilient life, asserting that every material possesses its own life cycle and story, deserving aesthetic, ecological, and existential rebirth. This thesis underscores art as a bridge to reconstruct a sustainable relationship between humanity and nature.
The exhibition “MATERIA RENATA – RENEWED MATTER, REBORN SUBSTANCE” by artist Nguyễn Quốc Dân at the Vincom Center for Contemporary Art (VCCA) showcases over 50 sculptures and installations crafted from recycled materials. The exhibition aims to raise awareness about environmental pollution and modern consumer culture, while re-establishing the relationship between humans, materials, and nature. The artworks utilize discarded items such as bottle caps, electronic components, old mannequins, fabric scraps, and plastic waste, transforming them into diverse forms like paintings, sculptures, and large-scale installations. Nguyễn Quốc Dân describes his style as Anti-Cubism, characterized by the use of colorful wires, industrial scrap, and unconventional geometry. This exhibition serves not merely as a style but as a statement affirming the value of overlooked objects. Curator Đỗ Tường Linh highlights the resilient life beneath layers of plastic. The exhibition is structured around two thematic lines of work: weathered plastics found on shorelines and waste from the fashion industry. Through art, the exhibition seeks to disseminate a positive spirit of regeneration, not only for materials but also for mindset, behavior, and community consciousness, fostering sustainable internal change.
