ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The artwork is made from traditional Vietnamese handmade dó paper, bioplastic fibers, and 24K gold paint, measuring approximately 38.5 × 115 × 15.5 cm. It belongs to Lê Hiền Minh's practice of exploring the plight of women, war memories, Vietnamese identity in the context of migration, and is particularly related to the "Ornamentalism" series, a project centered around the image of Vietnamese women in the nail industry in the United States. "The Nail of Revelation" is a powerful piece because it doesn't directly illustrate a story, but rather creates a highly memorable hybrid symbol. Visually, the artwork impresses with its depiction of a gun transforming into a female body—jewelry—weapon, with long, golden nails resembling thorns, claws, or projectiles. In terms of discourse, the artwork questions stereotypes about Vietnamese women, Vietnamese immigrants, the nail industry, war memories, and masculine power. The sharpness of the work lies in the fact that Le Hien Minh does not deny the symbols imposed on Vietnamese women, but rather seizes them, distorts them, and transforms them into tools of critique. From a gun and fingernails, the work constructs an image that is both beautiful and dangerous, ironic and full of resistance.
