ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In his portrait of Trịnh Công Sơn, Chóe not only depicts the musician through his thin face, round glasses, and slender figure, but also envelops him in a network of overlapping windows, expanding outwards like viewpoints into many different worlds. Trịnh's songs are thus envisioned as windows: each song is an opening leading into love, fate, war, loneliness, and compassion.
The caricature here doesn't focus on grotesque distortion, but rather exaggerates the character's inner life. Trịnh's face appears amidst layers of purple, gray, white, and pale blue, both clear and blurry, as if dissolving into the very space of his lyrics. Through this, Chóe suggests a Trịnh Công Sơn who is not just a musician, but someone who, through music, opens many doors to the human soul and thought.
