ABOUT THE ARTWORK
In his portrait of Vuong Hong Sen, Choe connects the collector's image with the world of antiques through a whimsical and fantastical association. From the ceramic vase below, the slender figure and profile of the character gradually emerge, suggesting a deity stepping out of an object in a fairy tale.
The patterns on the vase are repeated behind the head, merging the man and the antique into a unified form. Through this humorous exaggeration, Choe portrays Vuong Hong Sen as the holder and awakener of the mysterious world of antiques—a "god of antiques," living amidst the memories, knowledge, and stories of the past.
