Born in 1980 in Quang Binh, Nguyen Anh Duong studied painting at the College of Arts, Hue University, graduating in 2003; he later pursued a Master’s degree in Visual Arts at Mahasarakham University in Thailand, graduating in 2012. He is currently a lecturer at the College of Arts, Hue University, and a member of both the Vietnam Fine Arts Association and the Hue Fine Arts Association. In his creative practice, Nguyen Anh Duong works with a diverse range of materials and themes—spanning landscapes of Hue, silk paintings of young women, and Zen-inspired contemplations to experiments with abstract and surrealist nuances. He often develops his work in series, exploring a specific theme over an extended period before transitioning to a new creative direction. Hue—with its landscapes, architecture, and rich cultural heritage—serves as a vital source of inspiration for his art. The sea is a recurring theme that has left a distinct mark on Nguyen Anh Duong’s artistic journey, deeply connected to memories of his native Quang Binh and personal experiences. His seascapes frequently employ cool color palettes—particularly shades of blue—and blend realistic imagery with symbolic elements. His work *Gift of the Sea* (Quà của biển) won a "C" prize from the National Committee of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations in 2014, while the piece *Waves* (Sóng) received the annual award from the Thua Thien Hue Fine Arts Association in 2016.

ARTISTIC JOURNEY

Nguyễn Ánh Dương was born in 1980 in Đồng Phú, Đồng Hới, Quảng Bình. He graduated from the University of Fine Arts at Huế University of Arts in 2003 and completed a Master of Visual Arts program in Thailand in 2012. He currently works at the Huế University of Arts while actively participating in the local and national art scenes. He joined the Thua Thien Hue Fine Arts Association in 2011 and the Vietnam Fine Arts Association in 2014; he has served as the Head of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association’s branch in Huế and as the Permanent Vice Chairman of the Huế City Fine Arts Association.

Nguyễn Ánh Dương’s artistic journey is deeply intertwined with Huế, spanning his education and teaching career to his creative work and exhibitions. As a student, he participated in a group exhibition at the 2002 Huế Festival. In 2003, he took part in the *Gặp gỡ* (Encounter) installation and performance art exhibition. Since 2005, he has regularly participated in exhibitions featuring faculty from the Huế University of Arts and the Region IV (North Central) Fine Arts Exhibition. His involvement in environmental art projects alongside Vietnamese and Australian artists at the Huế Festival in 2006 and 2008 demonstrated an expansion of his practice beyond the confines of traditional easel painting.

His time studying in Thailand provided Nguyễn Ánh Dương with further professional connections within the regional art community. In 2011, he participated in the *Drawing by Both Sides* exhibition—featuring faculty members from both Vietnam and Thailand—as well as commemorative events at the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Mahasarakham University. In 2012, he took part in the exhibition *Thời gian và sự trở về* (Time and Return) alongside Vietnamese and Thai artists. ...subsequently continuing to appear in numerous group exhibitions in Da Lat, Nha Trang, Hue, and Quang Nam, as well as the Mekong Art 3 exhibition in Thailand in 2014.

Building on this foundation, his artistic activities have become increasingly intertwined with two mutually reinforcing streams: his personal creative practice and projects centered on culture and heritage. In recent years, he has actively participated in workshops and exhibitions such as *Heritage Sketching Journey in the Ancient Capital of Hue*, *Fine Arts and Heritage*, *Phuoc Tich Ancient Village through the Lens of Visual Arts*, *Living with Heritage*, *Returning to the Land of Heritage*, and *Nét Huế* (The Essence of Hue). His activities have also expanded to include international exchange programs with Thailand, Laos, and South Korea, as well as the *Spring in the Ancient Capital* exhibition in Cergy, France, in 2024.

In his creative work, Nguyen Anh Duong focuses on the spirit of Zen, historical memory, and the culture of Hue. However, for him, Zen is not merely a subject for illustration but, first and foremost, "a way of seeing": pausing before an object and observing its state of being, rather than imposing a pre-existing narrative or meaning upon it. This sensibility finds a natural affinity with the medium of lacquer, where the processes of coating, masking, sanding, and revealing surface layers become a way of engaging with time and memory.

Hue is present in Nguyen Anh Duong’s practice not simply as a landscape or local subject matter, but through cultural motifs he has long internalized: clouds, dragons, Chinese characters, vermilion and gold hues, architecture, artifacts, and imagery associated with royal court life and spiritual beliefs. Rather than reconstructing these elements in a classical style, he often transforms, layers, or blurs them, allowing the past to emerge as a stratum of sediment rather than a directly recounted historical narrative. This approach serves as a consistent thread connecting his lived experience in Hue with his painting practice. Alongside his creative and teaching work, Nguyễn Ánh Dương maintains a steadfast presence in regional and national art activities. He has repeatedly received recognition for outstanding works from the Hue Fine Arts Association (in 2011, 2016, and 2020) and was awarded a "Prize C" in 2014 by the National Committee of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations.

From his early experiments with installation, performance, and environmental art to his later, deeper focus on painting and lacquer art, Nguyễn Ánh Dương’s journey reflects a gradual shift toward a practice rooted in the cultural depth of Hue, Eastern philosophy, and a consciousness of time. His creative output, teaching, international exchanges, and participation in heritage projects collectively form a remarkably consistent artistic trajectory—one that embraces Hue as both a living environment and a source of cultural memory, continuously explored through the language of contemporary art.
