Lương Xuân Đoàn

Luong Xuan Doan was born in 1952 in Hanoi into a family with a tradition in the arts. From a young age, he was guided in painting by the artist Luong Xuan Nhi, thus early exposure to the visual thinking and values ​​of modern Vietnamese painting. In 1967, he studied fine arts in Hiep Hoa, Ha Bac, where he received basic training in drawing, composition, and color.

In 1972, before completing his studies, Luong Xuan Doan enlisted in the army. In early 1973, he followed his unit to the Central Highlands battlefield and worked at the Central Highlands Liberation Army Newspaper. During his trips with combat units, he created many sketches of soldiers, the battlefield, and military life. These drawings not only served as documentary evidence but also honed his ability to observe quickly, directly, and sensitively to the human condition in harsh circumstances.

After 1975, he continued sketching naval soldiers, military life, and the border war in the North. His battlefield experiences became a deeply ingrained memory, recurring in his work. However, instead of simply recreating events or illustrating victories, Luong Xuan Doan gradually shifted his focus to the silent traces of war, the losses, and the lingering traumas in people's memories.

After the war, he studied at the Vietnam College of Fine Arts, now the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, and graduated in 1980. His graduation work, "Sunset on Hon Tre Island," created on silk, won an award at the National Fine Arts Exhibition that same year. The work demonstrated an awareness of renewing traditional materials, expanding the expressive possibilities of color and space on silk.

After graduation, Luong Xuan Doan worked at the Army Fine Arts Workshop. War memories continued to be an important source of material in his work. The 1984 work "Thien Son Truong Son," originating from the image of the sandals of young women who sacrificed their lives on the Truong Son trail, marks a shift from realistic recording to the expression of memory and remembrance. Ordinary objects in the painting become symbols of absence and loss.

Luong Xuan Doan works with various materials such as oil paint, silk, watercolor, ink, and graphic art. From a foundation of realism and battlefield sketches, his visual language gradually shifts towards simplification, expressiveness, and evocative power. Images are condensed into shapes, rhythms, and empty spaces; details are restrained to expand the space for feelings, memories, and associations. Some black-and-white works using pen and ink show a tendency towards abstraction while still maintaining a connection to the real world.

Besides his creative work, Luong Xuan Doan also participates in journalism, illustration, research, exhibition organization, and art management. He joined the Vietnam Fine Arts Association in 1983, serving as both Permanent Vice President and President. His journey demonstrates a transformation from a battlefield sketch artist to an artist deeply interested in memory, traces, and the expressive potential of form.
