Hứa Thanh Bình was born in 1957 in Bình Dương, Vietnam. He studied at the Saigon School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1974, before completing his education at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Fine Arts in 1978. This rigorous academic training provided him with a strong command of pictorial techniques and laid the foundation for an artistic journey that moves fluidly between realism, expressionism, and abstraction.
For more than two decades, Hứa Thanh Bình worked at the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, where he also served as Deputy Director. The museum environment enabled him to engage closely with traditional Vietnamese art, folk art, and the evolving currents of modern Vietnamese painting. These experiences became an important source of artistic knowledge, contributing to a practice that combines cultural memory with an enduring spirit of formal experimentation.
Hứa Thanh Bình’s paintings encompass a wide range of subjects, including the human figure, childhood, Vietnamese classical theatre, Bàu Trúc pottery, still life, the sea, boats, horses, and abstract compositions. Rather than adhering to a fixed style, he continually moves between recognizable imagery and the autonomous possibilities of colour, line, and material. In many works, forms are simplified, elongated, or dissolved into overlapping layers of paint, allowing the subject to become part of the broader rhythm of the pictorial surface.
The horse is a notable recurring image in his practice. Its body is often rendered through vigorous lines, interwoven planes of colour, and dynamic movement. Instead of pursuing anatomical accuracy, the artist emphasizes vitality, psychological intensity, and a sense of freedom. In works engaging with traditional subjects such as classical theatre, Bàu Trúc pottery, or familiar cultural objects, he similarly moves beyond illustration, transforming them into formal elements within a modern pictorial structure.
In paintings that move further towards abstraction, recognizable imagery gradually gives way to the movement of colour, sweeping brushstrokes, scratched marks, and layered surfaces. Pictorial space is organized through contrasts between light and dark, density and transparency, emergence and dissolution. This places the viewer in a shifting perceptual state between recognition and association. The movement between figuration and non-figuration thus creates a characteristic openness within Hứa Thanh Bình’s painting.
He has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Vietnam and abroad. His works are held in the collections of the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts, the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, and various private collections. His distinctions include the Gold Medal at the Saigontourist Painting Awards in 1992, the ASEAN Art Award in Vietnam in 1996, and several awards at regional fine arts exhibitions organized by the Vietnam Fine Arts Association.
Hứa Thanh Bình may be regarded as an artist who has sustained a productive balance between a solid foundation in figurative art and a persistent drive for innovation. From culturally rooted subjects and the recurring image of the horse to abstract painting, he continually transforms objects and figures into rhythm, material presence, and fields of association, forming an energetic and open-ended visual language.
